Microbiologically induced corrosion of copper pipes in low-pH water

چکیده
The aim of this paper was to study the influence of microbial biofilms on the high copper levels measured in the drinking water of rural houses. Drinking water parameters and copper pipe surfaces were analysed in the copper plumbing systems of rural and urban houses. The water in rural houses had pH values of 6.2 and alkalinity values of 63mg/L as CaCO3, whereas in urban houses the pH values were 6.9 with alkalinity values of 98mg/L as CaCO3. The stagnant water of rural houses contained more than 5mg/L of soluble copper in comparison with just 0.4mg/L in urban houses. The inner surface of copper pipes in rural houses showed very porous deposit of malachite and cuprite along with extracellular polymeric substances, rod-shaped microorganisms, and pits. A bacterial strain identified as Variovorax sp. was isolated from bacterial biofilms. In contrast, the copper pipes of urban houses did not contain bacterial biofilms, the deposit of malachite and cuprite were homogenous and showed uniform attack. The existence of bacterial biofilms along with the aggressive water quality could contribute to the increase of the copper by-product release to water and to the formation of pits on copper pipe surfaces. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Culture dependent and independent analyses of bacterial communities involved in copper plumbing corrosion.
AIMS This study used culture-dependent and culture-independent approaches to characterize bacterial communities in copper plumbing corrosion and to assess biofilm formation and copper resistance of heterotrophic bacteria isolated from copper pipes. METHODS AND RESULTS Water and copper pipes were collected from a cold-water household distribution system affected by 'blue water' corrosion and p...
متن کاملThe Use of Phosphate-Silicate Inhibitor, in Corrosion Control of Drinking Water Distribution System
The chemical content of water pH, mineralization, alkalinity, hardness, calcium and magnesium compounds, carbon dioxide free provide guidance about buffering capacity of water. Therefore, if the mineralization and pH is low, the water is aggressive towards the materials used in manufacturing pipes concrete, steel, HDPE, PVC, PAX. If the mineralization is high, the pH is high, too and the water ...
متن کاملEffect of Water Nutrient Pollution on Long-Term Corrosion of 90:10 Copper Nickel Alloy
Due to their good corrosion resistance, copper and copper alloys such as 90:10 Cu-Ni are used extensively in high-quality marine and industrial piping systems and also in marine, urban, and industrial environments. Their corrosion loss and pitting behaviour tends to follow a bi-modal trend rather than the classic power law. Field data for 90:10 copper nickel immersed in natural seawater are use...
متن کاملEffect of Phosphate Inhibitors on Lead Release From Pipes
Hexametaphosphate tends to increase release of both particulate and soluble lead to drinking water. For every mg/L of residual hexametaphosphate, soluble lead increased by 1.6 – 2.5 mg/L after 72 hour stagnation in pure lead pipes compared to the same condition dosed with orthophosphate. Utilities should consider these adverse effects whenever polyphosphate is used to prevent scaling or iron pr...
متن کاملCopper Corrosion and Biocorrosion Events in Premise Plumbing
Corrosion of copper pipes may release high amounts of copper into the water, exceeding the maximum concentration of copper for drinking water standards. Typically, the events with the highest release of copper into drinking water are related to the presence of biofilms. This article reviews this phenomenon, focusing on copper ingestion and its health impacts, the physicochemical mechanisms and ...
